VALLANGE (sieur de)
Nouveaux systêmes ou Nouveaux plans de méthodes qui marquent une route nouvelle pour parvenir en peu de tems & facilement à la connoissance des Langues & des Sciences, des Arts & des Exercices du Corps. Paris, Claude Jombert and Jean Baptiste Lamesle, 1719. In-12, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the centre, spine decorated, lining and endpapers of painted and gilt paper, gilt edges on marbling (period binding). First edition of this work, the first of a collection of volumes of a pedagogical nature published by the author who proposed a new method to instruct children by introducing games in learning. A dedication copy bearing the arms of Prince Louis-Henri de Bourbon-Condé (1692-1740), then superintendent of the education of the young Louis XV, of whom he would later become the first minister. The Sieur de Vallange, a reformist pedagogue born around 1660 and who died after 1736, spent eight years at court as governor of a young lord. We owe him a treatise on the Art of raising young princes from the cradle (1732). Bookplates of two Anglo-Saxon collectors, including the handwritten one of Harry Corbett. Some foxing, halo at the head of some leaves. Hinges, corners and bottom cover restored.
