With the arms of Joachim Murat, Marshal of the Empire, Grand Admiral and Grand Duke of Berg (1806-1808) Original edition In-8 (250 x 122mm) Collation: (i-vii) viii-xiv (1 f.) (1) 2-403 pp. Illustration: 15 portrait plates drawn by Trezel and engraved by Guyot, Tassaert and Gauthier. Among them: the scholar Lalande, the painter Lagrenée, Morlant, Tronchet, Danse de Villoison etc. Binding signed by Tessier, with its gilt stamp. Red long grain morocco, gilt decoration, arms in the centre of the covers, roulette and net frames, very ornate long spine, blue silk endpapers and lining, the endpapers edged with two frames, one with Tessier's roulette, gilt edges. Provenance: Joachim Murat (1767-1815), Grand Duke of Cleves and Berg -- Joseph, Marquis de Lavallée (the author of the book) and dispatch: "Presented to the Right Honourable Lord Viscount Melville, First Lord of the Admiralty of England by the respect and deep devotion of Joseph Marquis de Lavalllée" -- Robert Dundas (1771-1851), 2nd Viscount Melville, First Lord of the Admiralty in 1812 (ex-libris armorié and note: "This copy was intended for Murat Grand Duke of Berg. But the work was never published in France on account of some whim of Napoleon. Neither was it allowed to continue the subject beyond 1807 although the Marquis de Lavallée remained chief of the Chancellery till very recently. There is not therefore another copy in England" -- an ex-libris heraldic book with the motto "d'espérer servir" -- acquired from Maggs in 1922 (London, cat. 418, no. 1157, £25).
