MONTAIGNE (Michel de).
Testing. Paris, Abel L'Angelier, 1600. Large volume in-8, green-stained hard calfskin, brown-red title piece on spine, red edges (18th century binding). Balsamo & Simonin, n°344. Reprint of the edition given by Abel L'Angelier in 1598, with other typographical ornaments and some variants, errors or corrections, which should no longer be attributed to the personal revision of Mademoiselle de Gournay. Title placed in the woodcut frame called "aux anges". An 18th century green vellum copy, cited by Balsamo & Simonin as having belonged to the Cardinal de Sourdis and the Carthusian monks of Bordeaux. From the libraries Bordes de Fortage (pink paper label glued inside the first plate) and Castelnau d'Essenault (engraved ex-libris). The current title on p. 815 is erroneously titled Livre second or instead of Livre troisième, an error not pointed out by Balsamo & Simonin (common misprint in other copies?). Ex-libris scratched on the title. Guards covered with numerous handwritten notes on Montaigne. Freckles. Brown ink stains and pen strokes on a few pages, wet spots touching the last 7 notebooks, worm gallery touching the text in the background of the Y to Cc notebooks. Upper cover formerly reinforced, slit at one jaw, corners reinforced with vellum.
