UNCUNABLE. - ANDRELINUS (Publius Faustus).... - Lot 45 - Giquello
UNCUNABLE. - ANDRELINUS (Publius Faustus). De influentia Syderum. Et querela parrhisiensis pavimenti. S.l.n.a. [Paris, Félix Baligaut for Denis Roce, between 1497 and 1499]. Gothic in-4 booklet of 6 unencrypted sheets, unbound. GW, 1872. - HC, 467. - Goff, A 698. - Shoveler, 739. Second edition of this poem dedicated to Guillaume Budé and composed by Fauste Andrelin, a Latin poet who taught belles-lettres in Paris where he died in 1518. Printing in Gothic characters by Félix Baligaut whose pretty typographic mark (reproduced by Renouard, n°29) appears on the title page, placed in a frame of four borders on wood. The work comically depicts, in a removed diatribe, the filth of the streets of Paris, whose worst soiling is not that of real garbage of all kinds, but the infamous babbling of the sophists, all these theologians engrossed in their incomprehensible scholastic Latin, and totally impervious to the beauty of the language (Jean-Christophe Saladin, Une bibliothèque humaniste idéal,2008, p. 153). Very rare Parisian incunabula, of which only 12 or 13 copies are recorded in public funds.
