DUVAL (Pierre)
Geographic memories of all countries. [sic] Of the world with several historical observations. Lyon, Jean Certes, 1676. In-12, fawn morocco, gilt border with fillets and a wheel, spandrels, central diamond-shaped cartouche drawn with small irons, the middle in reserve bearing in a circle initials forming a rebus, different on each plate, date 1685 gilt at the foot of the second plate, inner wheel, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Original edition. There are probably 2 editions of this edition under the same date and from the same publisher, same snack, which are distinguished in particular by a different typographic fleuron on the titles (interlaced figure for one, crowned dolphins interlaced for the other). The work is unknown in the main specialized bibliographies. A copy of a later edition (1686) appeared in the Chadenat catalogue, no. 3208. Pierre Duval (1619-1693), the King's publisher and ordinary geographer, was the nephew of the great cartographer Nicolas Sanson. His memoirs contain very interesting details about the geography, customs and religions of the inhabitants, as well as the natural history of various regions of the world: Africa (Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, Nubia, Congo, etc.), America (Canada, Florida, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Brazil, etc.), Asia (China, Philippine Islands, etc.) and Europe. There are also passages relating to Arctic and Antarctic lands. Attractive copy in an elegant binding with a singular decoration executed in 1685 for an unidentified amateur. The copy bears the engraved ex-libris and the handwritten signature in the title of Antoine Grimod de La Reynière, general manager of the Fermes à la douane de Lyon in 1689, secretary to the King and ancestor of the famous 19th century culinary critic. Missing the engraved world map. Worm gallery touching a few words at the head of five leaves in the N and O sections. Marginal multi-leafed moulding. Slight friction at the binding
