BRANT (Sébastien).

Stultifera Navis. Basel, Johannes Bergman de Olpe, March 1497. In-4, Russian fawn leather, gilt fillet, spine gilt, green title coin, blue edges (English binding, end of 18th century).
GW, 05054. - HC, 3746. - Goff, B-1086. - Excavator, 2820.
First Latin edition, translated by Jacob Locher, of this famous satire on the vices, abuses and madness of men.
One of the most beautiful and famous illustrated books in the history of the book.
Remarkable woodcut illustration, largely by Albert Dürer, comprising a woodcut half page on the title representing the madmen in the nave and 116 large allegorical woodcuts showing the various vices and abuses personified by the Madness.
Typeface by Johannes Bergman de Olpe at the end of the volume (cf. Heckethorn, reproduced p. 135).
A fine copy, from a very fine edition, from the Henry Huth (1880, I, p. 194) and Édouard Rahir (1930, no. 270) libraries.
A few light freckles. Hinges a little rubbed.
