REPRESENTATION OF THE "GOD N" IN THE FORM OF A TORTUE Mayan Culture, Mexico-Guatemala Recent Classical, 600-900 A.D.C. Beige ceramic L. 23,2 cm - P. 17,8 cm Maya effigy in the shape of god N as a turtle, beigeware ceramic, Mexico-Guatemala, W. 9 1/8 in - P. 7 in Provenance: Private American Collection Acquired by the present owner in 2004 Ancient Art of the New World, New York Private Collection, USA, 1972 This hollow ceramic figurine represents a turtle with large hands on its front legs and a human head. This association between man and turtle recalls one of the four aspects of the "god N", itself one of the main manifestations of the god Itzamná that texts from the colonial period present as having been the main deity of Mayan antiquity (creator in particular of writing and of the world in general). The "god N" has been related to the four Pawahtun mentioned in the "Bacab Ritual", associated with the cardinal points. JMH
