Furneaux in Tasmania in 1773. Published to accompany Buffon's treatise on magnetism and magnets, these fine "Carte des deÏclinaisons et inclinaisons de l'aiguille aimanteÏe reÏdigeÏe d'apreÃs la table des observations magneÏtiques faites par les voyageurs depuis l'anneÏe 1775" were constructed to show geomagnetic variation around the globe. These maps have on occasion been attributed to La Perouse, but they predated his voyage and include information from observations made on the voyages of Cook, de Bougainville, Carteret and others. Map no. 6, the south-west portion of the Pacific includes a fine depiction of Nouvelle Hollande and Nouvelle Zelande, but as yet no landmass is shown at the south pole, suggesting that information from Cook's second voyage was not yet incorporated. Provenance: Alphonse Le Cavelier (1800-1872), important book collector from Caen (from the family archive)
