DAYAK POISON CONTAINER, EASTERN KALIMANTAN,...

DAYAK POISON CONTAINER, EASTERN KALIMANTAN, BORNEO, INDONESIA
H. 2.92 in – L. 2.55 in

Provenance:
- Collection Marc Pinto, Perth
- Collection Alexander Arthur, Bruxelles
- Collection Béatrice et Patrick Caput, Paris
Fierce warriors, the Dayaks used these small vessels to apply poison to their arrows before setting out for the hunt. This object, of exceptional quality, is outstanding in its original execution. Here, the cup is held by a strange creature. It is probably Aso. Its arms are stretched out to the back, its long webbed fingers have a firm grip on the object. The character’s expressive power combined with the virtuosity and originality of the movement make this poison vessel one of the finest examples from the region.
