Amongst the many Chokwe snuffboxes, this prestigious object stands out for the originality of its construction. The cup designed to hold tobacco is supported by a delicate female character here. Seated, with her straight back elegantly scarified, she carries the receptacle between her hands and bent legs. Her femininity is pleasantly highlighted, with the tip of her breast sensually suggested. Her naturalistic face is treated with great finesse. The details of her right eye have preseantly faded over time through contact with the owner. With lovely artistic balance, this cup bearer pays tribute to the first Chokwe woman who played a fundamental role in the society’s birth and growth. This feminine presence is a remarkable counterweight to the object’s actual use, associated with the masculine world. We are not aware of any similar pieces.
