Rare suite of four pieces of the same chess set in finely carved and engraved ivory, the King, the Queen and the two Rooks. The King and the Queen are represented as carousel figures on horseback, each holding a scepter with a double-headed eagle; the King in military costume, helmeted, a badelaire with an eagle's head hanging on his left flank, holding the reins in his left hand; the Queen, wearing a diadem, her hair raised in a bun, wearing a body of cotte over a lace shirt with floating sleeves, the skirt decorated with floral motifs; the two Towers are elephants, the trunk turned over on one side, a mahout standing on their neck, which carry on their backs a tower with an entrance at the back, two soldiers armed with a spear, back to back and head to head, on its roof. Oval terrace fixed on circular bases. South Germany or Bohemia, circa 1700 King and Queen, total heights: 8.8 cm and 8.4 cm; Towers, total heights: 7 cm and 7.5 cm - Total weight: 320 g. (small cracks, end of the rider's right foot missing) The King and Queen of this chess set, of a particularly refined execution, are inspired by horsemen such as could be seen in the carousels of the Louis XIV period (fig.a and fig.b). The tower, represented by an elephant carrying a tower on its back, can be found in German games such as the silver game commissioned by Frederick the Great in Halberstadt or a carved basswood game in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg (inv.
