GAUTIER Théophile (1811-1872).
Autograph letter signed to "My dear [Jean-Baptiste] Porcher" (s.l.n.d. [end of March 1858]). 1 p. in-8. Attached a drawing representing him. Interesting letter in which he asks for an advance on his royalties of "(...) one thousand francs (...)", he will be able to pay them back promptly because "I have a ballet in two acts : Sacountala danced by Mrs. Ferraris2 and which must pass after La Magicienne3. I am the only author of the libretto (...). I also have in rehearsal at the Porte Saint-Martin a one-act ballet4 which must accompany the play by Mallefille5 and which will be performed in three weeks (...)". Letter published in the general correspondence of Théophile Gauthier, 1858-1861, volume VII, p34 and 35, letter n°2530. 1 Date de Lovenjoul, optimistic forecast about the premiere of Yanko. 2 Amalia Ferraris (1830-1904) star dancer of whom T. Gautier will say "the most perfect ballerina in the world since the retirement of Carlotta Grisi". 3The great Opera of Halévy 4Yanko le Bandit (April 22, 1858) in its final form (2 acts). 5Les Mères repenties, drama in 4 acts by félicien Mallefille, created at the Porte Saint-Martin on April 15, 1858.
