BRAZZA Pierre Savorgnan de (1852-1905).
Autograph letter signed, to the president of the Geographical Society of the Province of Oran, Aïn Fezza [near Tlemcen in the province of Oran], May 1, 1897, 2 1/2 pp. in-folio, name of addressee partly scratched. The father of the French Congo a victim of businessmen. In April 1897, he leaves his post as government commissioner general and goes to Algeria to treat amoebiasis: "I would have been very happy if the companion who has come to share my life in Africa had been able to receive in person on her arrival the expression of the sympathies you have sent us here: but the state of health of those who have spent a long time in the colonies sometimes obliges them to make accommodations which have deprived me of this pleasure. To your letter, so flattering for the colleague and so kind to Madame Brazza, I answer with the wish that the Congo shipping line [set up by Brazza] which, through its stopover in Oran, offers convalescents from the whole western coast a precious transitional climate, becomes for our society a direct source of scientific information and for your beautiful city, particularly favored by its geographical position, an ever-increasing element of commercial development and prosperity..."
