COCTEAU (Jean).
About the Festival du Film Maudit in Biarritz. AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT. 4 p. in-8, folio (1949), erasures and corrections. From July 29 to August 5, 1949, the "Festival du Film Maudit" was held in Biarritz, organized by "Objectif 49", one of the most famous cine-clubs where, around André Bazin and presided by Cocteau, the new horizons of cinema and its critics were drawn. This text is certainly the closing speech. The Biarritz festival is a modest festival, a kind of meeting place where people who think that cinematography is not only a business. "The Bicycle Thief" proves it again. The miracle of this film is probably that it is as good as a short story by Gogol and that it seems to me that it will be a great success. I hope with all my strength that it will not add to the list of cursed films, that is to say films that a total absence of vulgarity risks making invisible except to those who consider the cinematograph as a means of expression equal to the others... Clear aureole on the leaves, more pronounced on the last one. Attached is a typescript of the same text (3 p. in-4 with some corrections).
