BAUDELAIRE (Charles).
L.A.S. to his mother. Undated, [Paris], Wednesday [28 October 1863], 1 p. in-8 in black ink. Concerns his royalties and the Michel Lévy publishing house. I was hoping for a letter from you this morning. Did this trip go without any trouble or accident, and especially how are you doing? Yes, the Lévy case is over. I am giving up all my future rights tomorrow for a sum of 2,000 francs payable in about ten days. This is not even half of what I need. So Belgium has to pay the rest. I am going to write to Belgium to obtain a treaty (because I don't trust Belgians), a treaty stating the price of each lesson, how many lessons in all, and how many lessons per week. The Poe gave (to me) an income of 500 fr per year. Michel treated the matter as one would treat the sale of a grocery store. He simply pays four years of the proceeds. I kiss you. Write to me. Charles. Correspondence II, 327-328. Sickles Drouot sale June 27, 1995.
