El Lissitzky.
Prun 5A, Vitebsk-Moscow, 1919/20 Three-dimensional suprematist lithograph on strong white vellum. Subject: 27,5 x 26,9 cm - sheet: 45,4 x 37,2 cm, matted. Printed in Vitebsk and intended for an album published in Moscow. The Proun (proekt outverejdieniya novovo - Project for the affirmation of the new), constitutes the heart of El Lissitzky's art. From 1920 to 1923, El Lissitzky named all his works Proun. The Proun combines a mixture of two and three dimensional geometric elements, thrown into a flat expanse, creating dynamic tensions. The sheet is accompanied at the bottom right by a letter indicating the series and a number, the latter referring to the number that the work occupies in the series, indicating the possibility of positioning the composition in different ways (four in principle). Presented in this way, the composition gives the impression of a clockwise rotary movement. The plates for the Proun album are not signed. According to Richard Lloyd, Deputy Chairman of the Prints and Multiples Department, New York, the 'Proun' printed in Vitebsk were printed by the hand of El Lissitzky. Margin slightly yellowed (traces of matting). Extremely rare, in exceptional condition The Dawn of Abstraction, Russia 1914-1923, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa 2017. El Lissitzky 1890-1941, Van Abbemuseum, 1990, page 101.
