Commines, Philippe de
Les Mémoires de Messire Philippe de Comines, Seigneur d'Argenton, contenans l'Histoire des Roys Louys XI. & Charles VIII. from the year 1464 to 1498. In The Hague, Chez Arnout Leers, 1682. 2 volumes in-8 (167 x 101 mm). Red morocco, gilt iron of the golden fleece in the center of the boards, spines decorated with the same gilt iron in the entrenerfs, green morocco lining with gilt roulette, same gilt iron in the center, gilt edges on marble (period binding). A CHARMING EDITION OF THE MEMOIRS OF COMMINES GIVEN BY THE ADVISER AND ORDINARY HISTORIOGRAPHER OF KING LOUIS XIV, DENYS GODEFROY. It is decorated with a portrait of the author and of Louis XI, a folding table and is enriched by a second volume which appears here for the first time and presents the "Divers traitez, Contracts, Testaments, Autres Actes et diverses observations servants de preuves et illustration aux mémoires de Philippe de Comines." A precious copy bound at the time probably by Boyet, in doubled red morocco, for Bernard de Roquelyne, baron le LONGEPIERRE, with his emblem of the Golden Fleece repeated. The baron de Longepierre, translator of the Odes of Anacreon and Sappho, of Bion and Moschus was the protégé of Madame and her son the Regent, and the tutor of the Count of Toulouse and the Duke of Chartres. Very fine bibliophile, he had his books bound in the best workshops of his time, notably that of Boyet and Padeloup. A few small stains to the binding, small epidermis to the upper lining of volume 1, some foxing.
