BAÏF, Jean Antoine de
Oeuvres en rime de Ian Antoine de Baïf, secrétaire de la chambre du Roy. Paris, Lucas Breyer, 1573. In-8 (177 x 108 mm) of 10 introductory ff., 272 ff. o.b., [2] ff. Red morocco, frame of two gilt fillets on the boards, smooth spine finely decorated, gilt edges (period binding). ORIGINAL EDITION of the first volume of the first collective edition of Baïf's works, dedicated to King Charles IX and containing 57 poems divided into nine books. Tchémerzine specifies that this work was published alone and in collection. It is thus normal to find it isolated. All these pieces are in first edition, with the exception of the first of the Météores, published in 1567, and probably the "Mariage de François roy dauphin et Marie roine d'Ecosse". The volume includes a table on the back of the title leaf, indicating the order in which the different parts of the collection should be placed. A friend of Pierre de Ronsard and a member of the Pléiade, Baïf distinguished himself as the main architect of the introduction in France of a measured versification, modelled on the poetry of Greco-Latin antiquity. A copy entirely rubricated in sepia ink, title ruled and rubricated, complete with the privilege leaf (which was granted to Baïf on July 26, 1571 for all his works) and the printer's mark, which are often missing (they are placed in this copy at the end). A precious copy with very large margins (height 173 mm), in contemporary red morocco, from the 18th century literary library "Domairon" with calligraphic bookplate. Louis Domairon, born in Béziers in 1745, writer, teacher of Napoleon Bonaparte, was a member of the book commission and general inspector of the public institution. Binding very much restored with inlay of original elements on the spine and on the boards, and re-gilding. Tchémerzine I, 266. Deschamps, Supplément au Manuel de Brunet, I, 86. J.P Barbier, Bibliothèque poétique La Pléiade, pages 291 and following.
