Born in Rome in 1925, this aristocrat from the princely line of the Ruspoli family of Poggio Suasa travelled the world from an early age. In the 1950s, he embarked with sperm whale hunters in the Azores: he made a documentary film about it, The Whale Men. In 1972, on the same subject, he directed Vive la baleine with Chris Marker. He then began to collect engraved sperm whale teeth, jewels, knives... During 3 months, in the 1970s, Mario Ruspoli and his wife Dominique will travel to Africa for a series of conferences. They came back with a taste for objects and culture. On their return, they met Acher Eskenazy, from whom they acquired most of their pieces from Oceania.
