Raymond Dierickx (1904-1978)
The sailor's dream Gouache and pastel on paper framed under glass Signed lower right and titled on the back, accompanied by a label "Exposition d'Uccle Centre d'Art" Around 1930 69 x 87 cm at sight Raymond Dierickx (1904-1978) was a watercolor painter trained from 1909 to 1920 at the Brussels Academy. He exhibited for the first time in 1926 and became a professor at the art school of Ixelles from 1932. He shows a predilection for festive scenes, fairs, processions and allegorical compositions. He also developed large frescoes on the theme of the colonies, travel and exotic countries. He pays particular attention to the ornaments, clothing, masks and statues, which he faithfully represents. The dream of the sailor translates here wonderfully the theme of the immobile journey, the sleeping sailor seeing in his dreams the countries and populations met in the four corners of the world, in a debauch of symbols and colors.
