Beaded knife sheath Plains, United States Leather,... - Lot 8 - Giquello
Beaded knife sheath Plains, United States Leather, beads, metal cones H. 25 cm - l. 8 cm Presented in a frame H. 57,5 cm - l. 27 cm Provenance : - Private collection, France This sheath is richly decorated with fine beadwork and bangs decorated with tin cones. In the center of the composition, there is a blue beaded motif on a white background representing an animal head. The upper part is decorated with complex geometric patterns (triangles, tridents, broken lines) based on red, blue and black beads on a yellow background. The knife was used in hand-to-hand combat as well as to take the scalps of defeated enemies. The careful ornamentation of the scabbard underlines the role that this weapon played in the eyes of its owner. Like war jackets, headdresses (especially feather headdresses for the most valiant warriors or chiefs) or leggings, the sheath or scabbard was a distinctive sign of its owner's status. As such, it had to be decorated with materials and motifs that, beyond their mere ornamental aspect, underlined its importance. This beaded holster could not be removed to be examined in detail.
