Beaded strip Plains, United States Skin,... - Lot 5 - Giquello
Beaded strip Plains, United States Skin, beads and fabric H. 167 cm - W. 8,5 cm Presented in a frame H. 183 cm - W. 27,5 cm Provenance : - Private collection, France This beaded strip presents a geometrical decoration on a background of white beads (colored bands, rosettes, triangles). It is a characteristic example of blanket strip. These ornaments were attached to blankets and clothing worn by the Lakota Sioux and neighboring populations, especially the Cheyenne. The strips could be reused on successive blankets and were the most important element of prestige. Similar examples are reproduced in the book Spirits in the Art by James A. Hanson, The Lowell Press, 1994 on page 81. The circular rosette pattern punctuated by blue triangles and repeated four times along this beaded band symbolizes the "world circle" and its four cardinal directions around the sacred center, concepts fundamental to the Plains worldview. This beaded band could not be decropped for detailed examination.
