SURCOUF Robert (1773-1827).
Letter signed to "Monsieur Sauveur" St-Malo, September 11, 1809. 1 p. in-4. Address, postmark, paper torn at the wax seal. He gives advice to a colleague "If you have the chance to land one or two ships from Colombia, your fortune will be made. According to the advantageous course of your schooner, you will run little danger of being caught. Recognize the ships up close; for the good ones are usually well decked out and often look like warships. (...) P.S. If you leave with N.E. winds, I urge you to tighten the wind on starboard tack, as far as the coast of England, so that your catch can reach the coast of France on the other side. If, on the contrary, you put out with winds from the South, I commit you to cross between the Sorlingues & Lizard, or on John Bank. In addition, you can do what you want on this subject. (...) ". Three offprints are attached: 1 ordinance of January 16, 1780 and 2 rulings (October 11, 1780 and December 15, 1782) on the race and the armament of privateers.
