SÉGUR Sophie Rostopchine, comtesse de (1799-1874).
Autograph letter signed to "Ysaure", Malaret, January 15, 1873. 4 pp. in-12. Header with his crowned figure. Interesting political letter, it begins by evoking the wishes for the new year [1873] and " (...) unfortunately my hand preserved such a stiffness (...) I hope that the so unforeseen death of the poor Emperor changes the situation of the country.I hope that the death of the poor Emperor, so unexpected, will change our ridiculous government by overthrowing the ambitious fool who reigns over us as a traitor and who pretends to sit his horrible Republic on his ridiculous carcass; it takes so few things to make them disappear one by one. But the House is so foolish, so good-natured, men of will and wisdom so rare, that the good Lord will not yet take pity on us. The only way that could save us, it seems to me, would be the adoption of the young Prince by the Cte de Chambord, the dynasty would have a future; the right and the glory which have so much influence on the French spirit, would be reunited, the Orleans would remain by their fault in the bag to the revolutions, all the army would be for the double flag, preserving the same leaders; The Pope, who loves the Cte de Chambord and who loves the Imperial Pce, would bless this fusion; Europe would tremble, America would light bonfires and everything would be ready for the triumphal entry of the family of the good God during the summer. Isn't this a beautiful and good solution... and quite unexpected for the moment (...) Paul is in Chislehurst for the funeral of the unfortunate Emperor. The young Prince is pitied as well as the Empress; but he is especially pitied. (...) " Death of Napoleon III on January 9, 1873.
