BIBLIOGRAPHY - SCIENTIFIC EDITION RIAUX Francis-Marie... - Lot 8 - Giquello
BIBLIOGRAPHY - SCIENTIFIC EDITION RIAUX Francis-Marie (1810-1883). Set of 15 autograph letters signed to his publisher G. Charpentier, Rennes, this set dated from June 16, 1842 to February 26, 1843. 29 pp. and two half pages, in-8 and gd in-4. Address, postmarks, letterhead of the Faculté des Lettres for some documents. This set deals with the research and writing work done by Francis-Marie Riaux, Agrégé de Philosophie for the edition of Francis Bacon's works. On June 16, 1842 he explains " (...) In the grip of this sad translation by Lasalle, I have often complained about the sentences he passed over, the misinterpretations he made, and the thousand periphrases he added on his own (...)"; On June 16 he announces "I am finally sending you the first volume of Bacon. It contains the entire De Augmentis. (...) As for the table of contents of the 1st volume, there is only to copy the chapter titles as they are corrected by my hand (...)"; on July 30 he is pleased to finish the 2nd volume, but he is "(...) on the teeth, out of breath, not able to go on. You will judge of the trouble I have taken in going through the corrections of the first book (...)"; the following letters evoke various subjects such as: the delays of corrections, always too long for the editor; the additions and corrections of the introduction, the notes and the proofs. Finally, on December 4, he announces: "I have put the good to print after corrections carefully made. (...) I am now going to write to some friends to push for the sale of your Philosophical library (...)".
