The Vagabond Oil on panel signed, dated 90 and annotated "Monte Carlo" lower left, titled on the back, label of the 1890 salon 37 x 45 cm Henri Royer is the son of Jules Royer, creator of one of the most important lithographic printing companies established in Nancy. Immersed in the world of art, Royer entered the School of Fine Arts in Nancy where he met Émile Friant. He exhibited his first works at the Salon de Nancy and his early successes allowed him to travel to the Netherlands to study with Friant, who had a great influence on him. Upon his return in 1888, he enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris where he was a student of Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. In 1890, he unveiled his painting Le Vagabond at the Salon de Nancy, for which he received an honorable mention.
