Mumuye figure, Nigeria Wood H. 88,5 cm Mumuye figure, Nigeria H. 34 3/4 in According to family tradition, the Mumuye were acquired from Jacques Kerchache. On Mumuye territory there is a hut reserved for statues, called iagalagana. These benevolent figures are said to be used to cure illnesses, to contribute to climatic changes or to predict the future. This obviously feminine figure has attributes that are rare on these statues. The imposing sagittal crest marks the hairstyle that falls on either side of the face. The eyes are round, the nose has a pierced septum, the mouth is projected forward. The massive neck is placed on protruding shoulders, from which emerges a delicate little chest. The arms are wide and powerful. A small conical navel is sculpted at the bottom of the cylindrical torso. The figure rests on two wide and powerful legs.
