SONGYE MALE STATUE, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC... - Lot 56 - Giquello
SONGYE MALE STATUE, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO Wood, horn, cowrie shells, glass paste beads and plant fiber H. 48 cm Provenance: - Former Inti Ligabue collection, Italy. As François Neyt points out, "effigies of ancestors reveal a mystery; they do not explain it." Represented standing in a hieratic attitude, this anthropomorphic effigy is part of the Songye mystery. The face with its stylized features is supported by a cylindrical neck, adorned with necklaces of pearls, reinforcing the magical power of the statue. The eyes, represented by two cowries, are wide open and seem to scan the horizon. The thick eyebrows in relief meet at the base of a triangular, flattened nose. The quarter-moon shaped mouth is enhanced by an emerging rectangular beard. The square shoulders contrast with the protruding chest and generously rounded belly. The broad, flat hands are placed on either side of the prominent navel. The firm, arched buttocks rest on slightly bent legs. The flat, elongated feet are firmly planted on a circular base. This effigy is characterized by a striking expression of power and vigilance.
