Dayak shield, Borneo Wood, rattan, pigments... - Lot 38 - Giquello
Dayak shield, Borneo Wood, rattan, pigments H. 104 cm Dayak shield, Borneo H. 41 in Provenance: - Galerie Valluet-Ferrandin Rare Dayak shield. Although classical in form, two superimposed reptiles, painted with black and ochre pigments on a green background, replace the traditional central figure of the dragon, which nevertheless takes various forms among the many tribes living on the island. The back of the shield shows signs of prolonged use. A polychrome painted shield with a similarly unusual representation can be found in the Tropen Museum in Amsterdam, and another in green is shown on a plate (bd. III, Taf. XIX) in the Internationales Archiv für Ethnographie, Rijksmuseum van Oudheden te Leiden dated 1888.
