* Pulverin Mende, Sierra Leone Ivory H.... - Lot 1 - Giquello
* Pulverin Mende, Sierra Leone Ivory H. 25 cm Mende powder horn, Sierra Leone H. 9 13/16 in Provenance : - Former Bertrand Goy collection Bibliography : - Joe Henggeler, Ivory trumpets of the Mende, African Arts, vol 14, No 2-60 BEFORE 1947 Elephant spp (Elephantidae spp) ivory specimen in compliance with the AM of 4 May 2017 allowing the commercial use of antique Elephantidae ivory. For an exit from the EU, a CITES re-export will be required, this being at the expense of the future buyer. The tradition of ivory carving among the Sapi of Sierra Leone has been known since the 16th century, when the creations of these "Côte de la Malaguette" artists first appeared in the royal curiosity cabinets of Europe. The lovely object presented here ends with a face similar to those on the helmets of the female Sandé initiation society. The delicate patina enhances the geometrical decorations traditionally found on Mende hunters' horns.
