Attié or Ebrié statuette Ivory Coast Wood H.... - Lot 212 - Giquello
Attié or Ebrié statuette Ivory Coast Wood H. 25 cm Superb Nkasopi female statuette, standing, arms along the body, wearing a colonial helmet, the musculature represented by bulbous volumes quite characteristic. The round face is finely treated: the bulging eyes are slit in the middle to signify an introspective gaze, the arches and nose are very thin, the cheeks and times decorated with scarification marks, the mouth expresses a slight pout. The various characteristics of this sculpture undoubtedly link it to the hand of an identified and known sculptor, the "master of rounded volumes", of which several examples are preserved in private and public collections (see for example: Barbier-Mueller Museum, inv. 1007/12, entered in the Joseph Mueller collection before 1939). Our example shows important signs of ritual use, including a beautiful shiny and nuanced patina. The feet are missing. There are some chips on the edges of the helmet and some wear.
