Ikwere mask Nigeria Wood, basketry H. 66... - Lot 205 - Giquello
Ikwere mask Nigeria Wood, basketry H. 66 cm Rare dance crest of a beautiful abstraction representing a bird with a long notched beak. On the spherical skull, the coffee bean eyes are visible in relief, next to the ears. A median bead divides the skull in the continuity of the beak. A woven rattan support fixed at the base of the mask allowed to maintain it on the dancer's head. The surface is covered with kaolin. Beautiful material for use. The Ikwere live in the Niger Delta region, east of the Abua territory, between the Ijo to the west and the Igbo to the east. Marked by numerous estuaries and mangrove forests, this delta region is also known for the pomp of its ceremonies, which essentially allow for the renewal of links with the spirit world, in this case the alliances with the water spirits who are said to have transmitted the art of masquerades to man.
