Luba or Songye pendant from the east Congo... - Lot 97 - Giquello
Luba or Songye pendant from the east Congo DRC Ivory H. 18,5 cm Superb dignitary pendant in the shape of a crescent, carved in a hippopotamus tusk, decorated at the top with an ancestor's head whose features have been erased by handling and rubbing. The body is pierced with two lateral holes that allowed the object to be worn as a pendant. The central cavity allowed the addition of magical substances that gave the ornament a real talismanic power. Beautiful honey-coloured patina. Provenance Marc Léo Félix (Brussels) Private collection (USA) David Serra Gallery (Barcelona) Publication Black hands white gold, Ivory sculpture in Congo, vol. 4, edited by Marc Léo Felix, June 2012, p. 250 Rites, dances and ornaments, David Serra Gallery, 2012 Salon de beauté, Maine Durieu Gallery, 2013
