Koulango pendant Ivory Coast Gold H. 2... - Lot 78 - Giquello
Koulango pendant Ivory Coast Gold H. 2 cm Extremely rare Koulango gold pendant showing a stylized anthropomorphic figure. He is represented with his legs bent, probably on his knees, his hands resting on his thighs. His sober face, marked by two dots symbolizing the eyes, is turned towards the sky. The nose and mouth are not represented, the chin stretched forward is prognathic. Two projections, similar to antennae, represent the ears. This object corresponds in every respect to the iconography of Koulango pendants, most of which are made of bronze. The gold models, on the other hand, are extremely rare. The first referenced example was reproduced on a plate in 1756 among Egyptian antiquities. See the article by Max Itzikovitz in Arts d'Afrique No. 16 (1975, pp. 8-11).
