Rare and beautiful framed photographic print of Grand Duke Serge Alexandrovich of Russia (1857-1905) and his wife Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna (1864-1918) on horseback, captioned at the bottom in Russian by Grand Duke Serge: "Oren(bourg) - May, 1899. Your commander of the troops and his wife", with the autograph signature in Russian "Elisaveta" of his wife Elisabeth Feodorovna. 16,5 x 22,5 cm History The Grand Duke Serge Alexandrovich of Russia was the fifth son of Tsar Alexander II. Commander of the 38th Tobolsk Infantry Regiment and the 5th Kiev Grenadier Regiment, in 1882 his brother Alexander III appointed him commander of the 1st Battalion of the Preobrazhensky Guard Regiment, an elite regiment founded by Peter the Great, with the rank of colonel. Seven years later, he was promoted to the rank of major-general, before becoming governor-general of Moscow in 1891. In 1896, he was elevated to the rank of lieutenant-general. He was assassinated by a bomb in his car on February 17, 1905. His wife Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia (1864-1918), born Princess Elizabeth of Hesse-Darmstadt, sister of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (1872-1918), was known for her beauty and charitable works for the poor. After her husband was murdered in 1905, she became a nun. She was executed by the Bolsheviks in 1918 and canonized in 1981. Provenance - Given by Grand Duke Serge Alexandrovich of Russia and his wife Elisabeth Feodorovna to Count Feodor Maximillianovich Nirode (1871-1952), a Russian major-general. - Preserved in his descendants
