HADAMARD (Jacques).
Philosophical introduction to mathematics. S.l.n.d. [20th century]. Manuscript folio, about 162 pages, aubergine half calf, gilt title on spine (Modern binding). Handwritten copy, in a very neat and legible handwriting, the chapter titles in red ink. Apparently unpublished text by Jacques Hadamard (1865-1963), a great French mathematician who was interested in many areas of the field of mathematics: number theory, mathematical analysis, mechanics, etc. President of the French Mathematical Society, he succeeded Henri Poincaré at the Academy of Sciences and obtained the chair of analytical mechanics and celestial mechanics at the Collège de France. The manuscript is divided into several chapters: the nature of mathematics, fundamental notions, the notion of reasoning by recurrence, the evolution of mathematics from the Renaissance onwards, the modern period and the contemporary period.
