TITTEL (H.).
Sumo. Der japanische ringkampf. Nach japanischen Quellen. Gedruckt und gebunden in der Lagerdruckerei des Kriegsgefangenenlagers Bando, Japan [Japan, Bando Detention Camp Printing House], 1919. In-4, frontispiece, 42 pages and one leaf, sewn with a cord, title printed in Japanese on the first board ("publisher's" boards). First edition of this treatise on sumo, printed and bound in a prison camp in Japan during World War I. Very rare. Very rare. During the Great War, Japan fought on the side of the Allies and took in particular in November 1914 the German possession of Qingdao in China, taking about 5000 prisoners who were transferred and interned on the archipelago at the Bando camp (Tokushima prefecture). The author of this treaty, a man named H. Tittel, was one of these German prisoners of war. The work was printed and bound on the spot. The text, in oban format, is printed on rice paper. Interesting illustration, comprising 33 figures in the text and 5 colour plates including a large folding frontispiece, all woodcut, and representing famous wrestlers, technical holds and accessories of the rikishi (and not sumotori as they are wrongly called in France).
