IMAGES OF EPINAL. - Grand theatre nouveau.... - Lot 201 - Giquello
IMAGES OF EPINAL. - Grand theatre nouveau. Épinal, Pellerin, circa 1900. Set of 56 oblong folio plates (52 x 40 cm), in transparent sleeves in a modern black cloth portfolio. 56 beautiful plates from the deluxe edition, lithographed in colour and enhanced with gold. The large plate of the front of the theatre and the plate of the proscenium with the curtain down are included; the other 54 plates represent various scenes, sets and characters. Between 1840 and 1905 the imageries of Eastern France created numerous sheets of theatre sets. The oldest paper theatres of Epinal appear around 1840 in the form of figures to be cut out and glued on cardboard to build miniature theatres. The Grand théâtre nouveau published by Pellerin at the end of the 19th century marks the culmination of these fragile theatres which sought to fill children with wonder and awaken their imagination. "The backdrops of the first editions offered country landscapes, peasant interiors, a French military camp, etc. [...] The use of lithographic techniques and gilding allowed to enlarge the surfaces and gave these images a certain sumptuousness very quickly. [...] The mixture of imagination and realism gave this production an undeniable charm" (Bouvet, Le Grand livre des images d'Épinal, 1996).
