Aristide Horace Letourneux belonged to one of the oldest families of Angers. Born in Rennes in 1820, he died in Algiers in 1890. He was a lawyer, botanist, entomologist and ethnologist in Algeria. Appointed prosecutor in the city of Bône (Algeria), he studied Arabic and Kabyle and became adviser of the court of Algiers, president of the climatology society of Algiers and vice-president of the historical society of Algiers. In 1868 he published with Adolphe Hanoteau, a work entitled La Kabylie et les coutumes kabyles. He was a member of the botanical society of France, and of several scientific societies. At his death, his library of 8000 volumes was bequeathed to the National Library of Algiers, his archaeological collection to the city of Nantes, and his collection of molluscs to the Museum of Natural Sciences of Angers.
