OWEN (Robert)
Short exposition of a rational social system. S.l.n.d. [at the end]: [Paris], Imprimerie de Marc-Aurel, [1848]. 6-page folio pamphlet, in sheets. Important and very rare propaganda piece launched by Owen in Paris during the 1848 Revolution. Founder of English socialism and of the cooperative movement, Robert Owen (1771-1858) was one of the great figures of socialist thought, in whom Marx and Engels recognized one of their masters. After the events of February 1848, he went to Paris to support the socialist revolutionaries. Owen's activity in Paris was twofold: to meet the greatest number of political leaders and to spread his doctrine by word and deed. [...] Owen's Parisian episode is part of the long series of experiments attempted by this pioneer to demonstrate the rationality of a social system that would liberate men from their material and moral servitudes (Maximilien Rubel, "Robert Owen in Paris in 1848" in L'Actualité de l'histoire, n°30, 1960, pp. 1-12). This manifesto is the most concise and the last of the five propaganda writings published by Owen during his stay in Paris. Printed in two columns. Chapter V gives a comparative table between the present society and the new society desired by Owen ("After 60 years, contemplative life and meditation"!).
