Pierre Dalmond (1800-1847) is a pioneer of linguistic studies of these regions of the Indian Ocean (Jean-Paul Alain, "Pierre Dalmond, (1800-1847), missionnaire français" in Dictionnaire de l'ethnologie malgache, 2015). Considered as the initiator of the evangelization of Madagascar, he was vice-prefect apostolic of Bourbon Island and Madagascar.
