HAITI. - Republic of Haiti. Code civil. S.l.n.d.... - Lot 178 - Giquello
HAITI. - Republic of Haiti. Code civil. S.l.n.d. [c. 1826]. Small in-4, 416 pages, basane racine, smooth spine decorated, red title, marbled edges (Binding of the time). The first Haitian civil code. Edition published the same year as the original which was printed in Port-au-Prince. It is not cited by Max Bissainthe in his Dictionnaire de bibliographie haïtienne (1951), who indicates under n°791 a similar edition, published in Paris by Blaise and having the same number of pages. The Haitian civil code, in its last draft after the vote of the Parliament, is made up of thirty-six laws put together. These laws, voted separately and article by article, contain a total of 2047 articles and embrace, in a logical order, the major axes of the French code: certain general principles of law, the law of persons and the family, the law of succession and property, and the law of obligations, with certain modifications inspired by Haitian customs. [From 1826 to the present day, just 180 years ago, the Haitian Civil Code is still considered a legal monument that one does not dare touch, despite the attempts of the public authorities to recast it (Gélin Collot, "Le Code civil haïtien et son histoire" in Bulletin de la Société d'histoire de la Guadeloupe, n°146-147, 2007, p. 178). 178). Let us recall that Haiti, formerly Saint-Domingue, became, in January 1804, the first French colony in the New World to free itself from the metropolis. Handwritten mention on a cover: Donné par Segui-Villevaleix à V. L. Bleakley dit Békly en 7bre 1826. Hinges restored, otherwise a pleasant copy.
