COLLIER (John)
Handwritten documents concerning his inventions. 1818-1833. Set of 7 pieces, in a modern cardboard box-sleeve. Important file of manuscript pieces concerning the inventions of John Collier (1782-1835), an English mechanic who settled in France. Born in Newport, Shropshire, John Collier arrived in France in 1793 where he became a pupil of the mechanic and clockmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet. Around 1815, he set up his own workshop; this was the starting point for a series of mechanical inventions whose exceptional and lasting importance for the wool industry has been demonstrated several times: the first machine exported to England, the first machine tool based on the action of helical blades, the Collier sheet shearer will even serve as a model for wood and metal work (cf. Hemardinquer, "Une dynastie de mécanicien anglais en France ; James, John et Juliana Collier (1791-1847)" in Revue d'histoire des sciences, t. XVII, n°3, 1964). The file includes the following documents, all related to the creation of John Collier's companies for the construction and marketing of his inventions: - Company deed between André Poupart de Neuflize, Auguste Sevene, John Collier, Émile Magnan and Adrien Magnan for the general patented exploitation of shearing machines. January 1, 1818 (3 pages in-4, royal stamp and stamp of the administration). - Copy of the agreement between Poupart de Neuflize and John Collier for the construction of shearing machines. 1818 (3 folio pages). - Deed of partnership between John Collier, Émile Magnan and Adrien Magnan. December 31, 1823 (6 pages in-4, royal stamp). - Copy of the deed of partnership for the construction and sale of mowing machines called helical mowers... February 7, 1826 (7 pages in-4). - Note on the operations of the Société des Tondeuses considered under the report of the profits. April 30, 1833 (one page in-folio). - Certificate of application for a patent, for a machine to weave sheets and other fabrics. June 30, 1825 (7 folio pages on the printed letterhead of the Administration générale des haras, de l'agriculture, etc.). Document a little trimmed on the outer edge. - Certificate of application for a 2nd patent for a machine to weave sheets and other fabrics. March 3, 1826 (2 pages folio). Outer margin cut.
