JENNER (Edward)
Recherches sur les causes et les effets de la Variolae vaccinae, maladie [...] connue aujourd'hui sous le nom de Vérole de Vache. Lyon, Reymann et Cie, 1800, In-8, blue half-maroquin with long grain, smooth spine decorated, red speckled edges (Modern binding in the old taste). Le Fanu, n°36. First edition in French of Jenner's seminal work on vaccinia. Edward Jenner (1749-1823), a British physician and scientist, was the inventor of vaccination. His work was published in 1798 under the title An Inquiry into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccinae (cf. Dibner, n°127). The translation is due to Count de Laroque. The discovery of vaccinia as a means of treating patients infected with the smallpox virus (now eradicated) is the basis of scientific immunology and constituted "one of the greatest triumphs in the history of medicine" (Garrison-Morton). Restored tear to last leaf.
