SLAVERY. - Response of the Provincial Assembly... - Lot 159 - Giquello
SLAVERY. - Response of the Provincial Assembly of the North of S. Domingue to the Letter of the Directory of the Department of the Gironde. S.l.n.d. [Cap-Français, c. 1791]. Booklet in-4 of 9 pages, stapled, modern cardboard case. Extremely rare booklet: strong reaction of the colony of Saint-Domingue to the decisions taken by the National Assembly against slavery. The decree of May 15, 1791, which granted the rights of citizens to "people of color, born of free father and mother", provoked violent protests in Saint-Domingue. The Provincial Assembly of the North of the island sent letters to the King, to the National Assembly and to the 83 departments, in order to express its total opposition to the decree and hoping to see the abandonment of these measures. Among these letters, was this answer made to the Directory of the Gironde: The National Assembly had declared, on the 12th of October last, that the Colonies would have the initiative on the state of the colored people. According to this Decree, the one of May 13 was at least useless, and the one of the following 15 a revolting violation of the one of October 12. [...] The Decree of May 15 places the sons of our slaves in a sphere to which we could never be presumed to have wanted to raise them. [...] You will truly be our Brothers, if you join us in withdrawing the Decree of May 15. Only one copy of this pamphlet appears to be in the public record (John Carter Brown Library). Wet stamp and handwritten signatures of Assembly members at the end.
