BREDIN (Louis)
Observations on the present state of the veterinary school. S.l., 22 September 1790. Manuscript, small folio, 6 1/2 pages, modern bradel boards. Handwritten draft, with erasures and corrections, of a reform plan conceived by Louis Bredin, director of the veterinary school in Lyon. This institution, founded in 1762 by the famous physician Claude Bourgelat, was the first one created in France and in Europe. The first part contains a short history of the establishment, a description of its organization and a list of its staff (the director, a professor and a sub-professor, a steward, a head of pharmacy, a head of forge, a doctor, a surgeon, two grooms, a gardener and a porter), with their salaries, the distribution of operating costs, etc. In the second, the author lists the many improvements that could be made (more stables, larger premises, dormitories for pupils, better hygiene and teaching conditions, etc.).
