MONTESSON (Charlotte-Jeanne Béraud, marquise de)]
The Countess of Chazelle. Comedy in five acts and in verse. S.l.n.d. [Paris, Didot l'aîné, 1785]. In-12, marbled calf, smooth spine decorated (period binding). Brunet, t. IV, col. 165. - Quérard, t. VI, pp. 247-248. Very rare first edition, printed in a few copies for the author's friends. Inspired by Laclos' Liaisons dangereuses and Richardson's Clarisse, this comedy was badly received and judged immoral. Widow of a lieutenant-general of the king's armies, illustrious for her wit and brilliant connections, the Marquise de Montesson (1737-1806) had a passionate affair with the Duc d'Orléans, the Regent's grandson, whom she secretly married in 1772-1773. By the end of the century, her theatre in the rue d'Antin had become a favourite meeting place for Parisian society.
