Remarks on the part of the Relation of Captain Cook's voyage, which concerns the strait between Asia and America, in a Letter addressed to Mr. D*** by Mr. Le Baillif Engel. Geneva, Jean-Emanuel Didier & Company, 1781. In-4, marbled half calf with small vellum corners, red morocco title-piece on the first board, smooth spine decorated (Modern binding in the old taste). Important work concerning the North Pacific, the Bering Strait and the mythical North-West Passage, for which the search for the latter was one of the main objectives of James Cook's third voyage. 2 maps showing the strait between Asia and America, with coloured outlines, printed on a folding plate. This edition is the same as the one published in the same year in Bern on the presses of F. Samuel Fetscherin, with a new title page. The original, in German, appeared in 1780. Samuel Engel, born in 1702 in Bern, died in the same city in 1784, was an eminent scholar who distinguished himself in many fields. He published important books on agriculture, economics and geography. He was a pioneer of modern library design, an honorary member of the Zurich Society of Natural Sciences, and co-founder and first president of the Berne Economic Society.
