FORTIFICATIONS. - Exposé des Preuves discutées dans le comité ordonné par le Roi au sujet de l'Isle de France. - Detail of the experiments made in Cherbourg by order of M. de duc d'Harcourt on the effect of the red balls, and on the best way to use them for the defence of the maritime posts. - Memorandum on the engineering corps. Various memoirs on fortifications. The first memoir concerns the island of France (former name of Mauritius), with a description of the land and sea forces, an examination of the different systems of defence of the island, the coastal batteries, the chicane warfare, the general disposition of the fortifications, etc. Experiments on the effect of red balls are reported by a man named Meunier, lieutenant general of the first royal corps of engineers of the Royal Academy of Sciences. At the end of the third memoir, there is a warning: I beg the persons in whose hands this memoir will fall to observe that it is of the greatest importance that it not fall to foreigners and especially to the Artillery Corps.
