GRIBEAUVAL (Jean-Baptiste Vaquette de)
Memorandum for the Coastal Batteries. - Memorandum on the construction of the batteries on the coasts, mounted in new mounts, and construction. S.l.n.d. [p. 4] : 16 September 1780. Manuscript in-4, one title leaf and 8 pages, stapled, sewn with a ribbon, modern cardboard case. Manuscript of military engineering, decorated with a captioned drawing plate Plan et coupe de la Platte forme d'un affût de Côtes de 24 (Plan and section of the flat form of a 24'' Coastal gun emplacement). Born in Amiens in 1715, died in Paris in 1789, Gribeauval was one of the great reformers of the French artillery. We owe to Gribeauval important reforms, improvements in the casting of cannons and the organization of light artillery, which rendered such great services during the wars of the Revolution. But what especially made his reputation, it is the total reform which he introduced in the artillery. He preluded it by a long series of modifications in the pieces, the carriages, the couplings, the caissons. He then made a major improvement by adopting definite and uniform types, which were kept until Napoleon and taken over by the Restoration. [...] In order to achieve the desired uniformity, Gribeauval had to completely rework the manufacturing and administration of the state workshops. In a word, he renewed the entire artillery service from top to bottom (Larousse). Gribeauval's works were published after his death in 1792, in a work printed at the State's expense and printed in 125 copies: Tables des constructions des principaux attirails de l'Artillerie. Small stains on the title.
